Digital Humanities Seed Funding for Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration and RGC Grant Application Support
Dear Colleagues,
Do you have an idea for a digital humanities project or a work-in-progress that you aim to develop further for RGC application? Do you require technical assistance to integrate the digital elements into your project?
The DH (Digital Humanities) Workshop is pleased to invite faculty in the humanities to apply for Digital Humanities seed funding to support work on a project in the fall semester of 2023. Funding will support the hiring and training of UG and MA students to work on a faculty project, under the auspices of the DH Workshop. This funding is tailored specifically to provide support for faculty members developing a new project in the digital humanities or adding a significant, new DH component to a current project. The aim is to facilitate further development of the project with the aim of applying for RGC funding in fall 2024. This seed funding is not intended simply for digital preservation of a completed research project.
Here are the key steps:
1. Proposal Submission
Deadline: 1st July, 2023
Interested faculty members are requested to submit a digital humanities project proposal (maximum 1,000 words).
Priority will be given to proposals to develop a new project in the digital humanities or to add a significant, new DH component to a current project.
The chosen proposals will be announced by 1st August, 2023.
2. Student Recruitment
1st August to 15th September, 2023
Upon the announcement of successful proposals, we will commence recruitment of student assistants. Our objective is to attract students from diverse disciplines, such as computer engineering and other programs outside the humanities.
3. Training and Project Building
Fall term of 2023
Selected students will receive tailored guidance from a DH Specialist (Qiuzi Guo) and a technician on how to contribute to the project, focusing on their unique academic backgrounds and the specific requirements of the chosen faculty member’s project.
The training will cover specific skills like cultural data analysis, text mining, data visualization, network visualization, historical mapping, etc.
Throughout the fall term, the faculty member whose project is funded is expected to meet on a regular basis (at least once and preferably twice per week with the team of students assigned to the project).
4. Project Preparation
Spring and Summer terms of 2024
In this phase, the faculty member is welcome to consult the DH Specialist while preparing an application for Research Grants Council (RGC) funding to be submitted in early Fall term of 2024.
Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for the seed funding is 1st July, 2023.
