Prof. Michael Chung Co-Leads $680K Grant from Schmidt Sciences’ AI-Humanities Initiative

Prof. Michael Chung has been selected as a 2025 awardee of the Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI), a global initiative by Schmidt Sciences. He serves as a co-Principal Investigator on the project “Playing Heaven: Remapping Early Modern Neo-Confucian Worlds with AI,” led by Prof. Javier Cha at the University of Hong Kong. The project will receive a grant of up to approximately HKD $5.3 million (USD $680,000), pending a satisfactory midterm review.
The HAVI program supports groundbreaking interdisciplinary work, funding 23 teams worldwide with a total of USD $11 million to develop new AI methods that advance scholarship across the humanities, from archaeology and literature to linguistics and art history, as well as to integrate insights from the humanities to further enhance the development of AI.
