Sha Fei's photographs depict the various roles of women during the war, including as soldier, worker, medical staff and victim. Through these photos, Sha Fei was able to illustrate how the notion of gender impacted women's war experience and participation in both politics and the military. Moreover, in order to expand the Chinese Communist Party's social coalition, it became increasingly important to mobilize women in the border region. Through the lens of Sha Fei, the masculinity of male soldiers was closely linked to nation-building, though there are many unusual perspectives.
